# User authentication

AltoReach devices can be configured to either use either local users, or a RADIUS server for user authentication.

- Local users — There are two types of local users: 
    - Admin users, who have read-write access to the WebUI.
    - Read-only users, who have read access to the Dashboard.
- RADIUS authentication — Users are authenticated by using an external RADIUS server. 
    - All RADIUS users have the admin role.
    - If the RADIUS server is unavailable, authentication will fallback to the local users.
